      The Blackboard Organization Deadline has Passed - What Now?

      The deadline for extracting organization content from Blackboard was March 31, 2021. Organization content is no longer available to users on Blackboard. Rest assured, these organizations have been archived.

      If for any reason you missed this deadline and still need to retrieve organization content, please submit a request to canvas@vcu.edu. In your ticket, please include the name/title of the organization you need retrieved and the eID of one user who will be enrolled as the Leader. All other members will have to be manually enrolled by the Leader of the organization as additional Leaders or Participants.

      To clarify, a Leader, as they were called in Blackboard, is the same as a Teacher in Canvas and a Participant is the same as a Student.

      Once your request is received, your organization will be temporarily re-enabled on Blackboard. You will then have 48 hours to export the organization content. Please note that your role in the organization must be Leader in order to perform this task. (If your role is a participant, the organization will not be enabled.) After 48 hours, the organization will be disabled again. Any changes made to the organization in Blackboard during this time will not be archived. It is up to the Leader to keep a record of any changes made.

      There is no deadline to import this content into Canvas. When ready, a Faculty and/or Staff user can then Create an Organization in Canvas and import the content.

      Note: Students cannot create organizations, and must have a VCU faculty or staff member sponsor the organization. The current leader of an organization must submit a request to have the organization restored from Blackboard. The Leader (or sponsor) must fill out the Organization Request Form and then manually add the student to the organization as a Teacher (Leader.)

      Only organization content will be imported into the new Canvas Organization; it will not contain any enrollments, user information, or submissions (in case participants were required to complete assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc.)

      Lastly, it is important to know that each Canvas Organization has 2 GB of storage space. If your organization exceeds this limit it is important that you clean the organization up before migrating it over; otherwise you will be unable to import it into Canvas.
