Why is there a white X over the Sophos shield near my taskbar clock?

When Sophos anti-virus 10 was released in June 2012 the Sophos shield is now white with a blue S.
When Sophos anti-virus update fails to complete correctly there will be a red circle with a white X over top the Sophos shield.

Please verify that you are connected to the Internet, then right click the shield icon and click "Update now" to try the update process. Once the update completes if the red circle and white X is still there try rebooting your computer. Once the reboot is completed if the red circle and white X is still there call the VCU IT Support Center at 828-2227.
