Interested in creating an online course or taking your online teaching to the next level? ALT Lab is excited to offer VCU faculty a series of courses to help you design, improve, and teach your online courses.

Best Practice in Online Teaching

Best Practice in Online Teaching will guide you through best practices in teaching/facilitating an online course. This fully online, self-paced facilitated course helps instructors understand different aspects of online course management, including instructor presence, communication with students, time/work management, and accessibility. The course is designed for faculty that will teach an online course that has already been built. Upon successful completion of this course with a final score of 80% or higher, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.

This course will take approximately 12-15 hours of your time and you will have 30 days to complete the course, beginning the day you start.

Participants must have an existing online course that they have either developed, was developed and is currently taught online at the university.

Enrollment is rolling and continuous through the end of the Fall 2020 Semester.

Designing for Online Instruction

Designing for Online Instruction is self-paced, facilitated course to help faculty design an online course. This course is fully online, requires no requisite knowledge and will take 12-15 hours to complete. Faculty will then work independently or with an instructional designer to complete the construction of their course. Faculty will have 60 days to complete their coursework and the final course project.

The course provides an overview of effective teaching strategies and techniques for revising or creating course learning objectives, aligning course materials and assessments, developing an online course using Canvas and other tools, structuring your online course content, and engaging students in the online environment. Upon successful completion of this course with an 80% or higher, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Enrollment is rolling and continuous through the end of the Fall 2020 Semester.

Evaluating Quality in Online Courses

Evaluating Quality in Online Courses is a self-paced, facilitated course designed to introduce faculty, department chairs, deans and other stakeholders in online learning to the evaluation process and rubric used at VCU. This course will explain these concepts while informing participants of accepted best practice in the field of online course design. The course is designed for stakeholders who have access to an online course that has already been built, but a sample course for evaluation can be provided upon request. Upon successful completion of this course with a final score of 80% or higher, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.
