Message from the Chair

On behalf of the faculty of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, I welcome you to our department and its tradition of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service.

Supporting multiple schools and programs on the MCV Campus of VCU, the teaching mission of the department is diverse, offering multiple courses in gross anatomy, histology, embryology and neuroscience in the schools of medicine, dentistry, and graduate studies. Paralleling the department’s teaching efforts, our exceptional research and scholarship in the neurosciences include state-of-the-art research in central nervous system circuit structure and function, CNS injury and repair, glial cell biology and the molecular biology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Supported by the university’s core facilities, these dynamic research areas provide fertile ground for the department’s Master of Science students as well as students who are part of various interdepartmental Ph.D. programs.

Our alumni have gone on to lead successful careers in academia, providing service to their profession and society via their participation as senior faculty, department chairs, center directors and deans in medical centers throughout the U.S. and abroad.

We encourage you to join this dynamic and supportive environment as you seek to expand your educational and research training. I look forward to welcoming you to our campus and sharing with you all the unique features of our department and its faculty and students.
