COVID-19 UPDATES: Spring Semester Information
Carolyn Phinizy is assistant professor and assistant chair of Art History. After teaching undergraduate courses for several years, she joined the department in an administrative capacity in 2015. Phinizy is passionate about finding new and innovative ways to approach the introductory survey of art. Her research investigates the ways in which nineteenth-century artists and writers engaged with earlier periods of history to invent new ways of understanding the past. Her other research interests include the ways in which colonialism and cultural appropriation shaped the development of art in the long-nineteenth century. Phinizy received her Ph.D and MA from VCUarts, where she specialized in the study of nineteenth-century art, and her BA in art and art history from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
