Cinema Program
J. M. Tyree is a distinguished visiting professor at VCUarts and serves as associate director of the Cinema Program. He is a contributing editor at Film Quarterly (University of California Press) and a nonfiction editor at New England Review (Middlebury College), and he was invited to contribute a critic’s ballot to Sight & Sound magazine’s Polls of the Greatest Films of All Time and the Best Documentaries of All Time. His books include “Our Secret Life in the Movies” (with coauthor Michael McGriff), an NPR Best Books selection, “BFI Film Classics: The Big Lebowski” (with coauthor Ben Walters, British Film Institute/Bloomsbury UK), “BFI FIlm Classics: Salesman,” and “Vanishing Streets – Journeys in London” (Redwood/Stanford University Press). He earned a B.A. in English Literature from Middlebury College and a B.A. and M.Phil. in Religious Studies from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, and was a Truman Capote-Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction in the two-year Creative Writing Fellowship Program at Stanford University.
