Boy Gets Gir

Written by Rebecca Gilman

Directed by Bostin Christopher

Although written in 2000, Rebecca Gilman’s hit play, Boy Gets Girl, is still terrifying and relevant today. A Chicago playwright, whose plays often focus on women’s issues, Gilman was the first writer to approach the subject of stalking and the linkage between the psychology of the stalker and the objectification of women’s bodies. The story concentrates on Theresa Bedell, a young reporter, who goes on a blind date with a seemingly nice guy named Tony. When Theresa rejects Tony’s further advances, the romantic attachment suggested by the ironic title shifts to a dark obsession that has dire consequences for Theresa, who begins to doubt both her sanity and her safety. Named one of Time magazine’s Best Plays of the Decade (2000-2010), Boy Gets Girl is often included on reading lists for Women’s Studies classes. Gilman initially came into public focus for her provocative play, Spinning Into Butter, which explored the dangers of both racism and political correctness. Critics such as Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune have said of her work “…..she writes plays with such intriguing plots that the audience finds itself hungry for what is going to happen next—and once she has the viewer under that narrative spell, she does not shirk from exposing complex themes with a strongly feminist sensibility.”  Boy Gets Girl is tense and dramatic but has surprising scenes that are darkly comic.
