Through individualized advising, programs and online resources, we strive to help students make informed and intentional career decisions. Our role is to function as an educational entity, rather than as an employment agency. We offer a number of different services to teach students to reflect on their skills and interests, develop job-search competence and become focused professionals with long-term career goals.
We know that your student’s time at VCU will be one of excitement and personal growth. Our role in that process is to help your student define and achieve their career objectives. Our career advisors serve all undergraduate, graduate and first-professional students through individualized career assessment, planning and education. The Schools of Business and Engineering have specialized career centers available, however, students in those schools may utilize our services as well. All of our services are free to VCU students.
Each of our advisors is trained to address a variety of concerns including:
We utilize an industry-focused model for career advising. Each advisor has expertise in major industry areas including; the arts, design, communications, media, education, human service, healthcare, government, public service and STEM fields.
Our advisors offer several career assessments to help students connect their strengths and personality to potential career paths. Students should make an appointment with an advisor to discuss taking an assessment.
Career advisors and student career ambassadors offer assistance without an appointment during our Drop-in hours. Drop-in advising allows students to get assistance with a resume, cover letter, personal statement or receive answers to basic questions about their career options. If your student is reluctant about visiting our office, encourage them to visit us during Drop-Ins to learn more about our services. A drop-in visit is often the first step for students in developing their career plan.
Drop-in advising is offered every Monday through Friday from 11 am until 3 pm. during the fall and spring semesters. Our office does not offer drop-in advising during the summer. The last day of drop-in advising for the Fall 2019 semester is April 30, 2019.
Every VCU student has access to Handshake, the university’s career development portal. With their personal account, students can search and apply for jobs, create a resume, make a career advising appointment or view a list of upcoming career events.
Students log in to their Handshake account through the VCU Single Sign-On using their VCU eID and password.
VCU Career Services hosts more than 100 workshops and programs during each academic year. Programs and workshops offer students the opportunity to develop core career skills and network with employers about internship or career opportunities.
A complete list of programs is available through your student’s Handshake account.
VCU hosts 14 career fairs each calendar year. Each fair is connected to a specific industry area. Fairs are open to all students and alumni regardless of major or course of study. We encourage students to attend multiple career fairs as a way to explore potential career paths.
Our office’s purpose is to provide your student with the knowledge and skills to become effective job seekers and to prepare them for success at every stage of their career. We offer many programs and services to help your student develop smart skills throughout the job search lifecycle. Encourage your student to make a career advising appointment.
As career advisors, we strongly encourage your student to get involved in as many experiential and leadership opportunities as are feasible. VCU offers numerous avenues for students to access those opportunities
Our office provides two unique services at no cost to VCU students and alumni up to one year after graduation.
Students can take advantage of the Suit Yourself closet Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. If students need help putting together a certain look, tying a tie, or pairing items from the closet with pieces of their own, our styling assistant can help!
Students who need a headshot for their LinkedIn profile can visit our office to have a photo taken at our LinkedIn photo booth, which features a professional quality photo back drop. Bring a valid VCU ID to check in at the front desk.
