This workshop provides an overview of what is involved in incorporating SEL practices into existing youth programs. The eight essential elements for readying and deepening a program’s efforts to foster social emotional, and cognitive development are explained, examining how SEL competencies, staff practices, and program design interact to support positive student outcomes regardless of program curriculum or content.
SEL Foundations and Self Awareness
Research in SEL best practices consistently shows that adults' awareness of their own social, emotional, and cognitive needs is foundational to supporting SEL skills in young people. These three different workshops on social, emotional, and cognitive development will help adults working with youth develop more self-awareness around SEL.
SEL Youth Work Methods
These six SEL youth work methods offer staff the opportunity to think about SEL practice in their own programs. In order to take the Methods, you must have taken the corresponding Foundations and Self Awareness workshop.
Social Development: Promoting Responsibility & Leadership and Fostering Teamwork
Emotional Development: Cultivating Empathy and Emotion Coaching
