Topic: Advances in Flow Chemistry via Microreactors as New Synthetic Tools
Dong-Pyo Kim, Ph.D.
Yonsan Chaired Professor of POSTECH
Chemical Engineering Department
Pohang, South Korea
Dong-Pyo Kim, Ph.D., is a Yonsan chaired professor of POSTECH Chemical Engineering, and a director of the National Creative Research Center for Intelligent Microprocess of Pharmaceutical Synthesis. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry at Temple University in 1991. Following post-doctoral research at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Materials Science & Engineering), he joined the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology as a senior researcher. Prior to POSTECH at 2012, he had worked in Applied Chemistry at Chungnam National University for 17 years. His microfluidic research has been rooted in materials chemistry of silicon-based resin. Since 2004, he has been devoted to the microreaction field, covering the reactor design, fabrication as well as continuous-flow syntheses in organics, polymers and nanomaterials under 18 years of national research grant support. Currently, he is pursuing development of an automated and autonomous synthetic workstation, including a scale-up microreactor for production of API and drug delivery systems. His work on a breakthrough approach for ultrafast organic reaction by handling highly unstable intermediates in the submillisecond range was published in Science (2016).
He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and 43 patents. He received an Academic Excellence Award (2017, Korean Chemical Society), Severo Ochoa Visiting Fellowship (2017, Spain) POSTECHIAN of the Year (2016, POSTECH), The Scientist of the Month (2016, NRF) and Best 100 Scientific Achievement (2014 & 2007, NRF), and was appointed a Yonsan chaired professor by POSTECH in 2017.
