Computer science senior to attend world’s largest gathering of women in computing

When the world’s largest gathering of women in computing takes place next week, Sabrina Kundu, a VCU Engineering senior majoring in computer science, will be there.

Kundu received a competitive scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC), held virtually Sept. 26-Oct. 3. As a GHC scholar, she will participate in workshops, networking sessions, panels, career fairs and speaker events alongside 30,000 women in tech from 115 countries. Her scholarship is funded by AnitaB.org, an organization that supports women in technology.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that VCU Engineering women have attended the event. Kundu hopes this will continue.

“Women's accomplishments in the tech industry and in academia are unfortunately still overlooked. GHC is a really important opportunity for us to celebrate each other's achievements and to network with the greatest leaders in the industry,” Kundu said.

Sports legends Serena Williams and Megan Rapinoe are among this year’s keynote speakers. While Kundu is eager to hear their message to other women in male-dominated industries, she’s even more excited about the career-focused events. These include a salary negotiation workshop, an entrepreneurship session led by Cloudflare co-founder Michelle Zatlyn and on-the-spot job interviews.

Advocating for women in computing is familiar territory for Kundu. As a teenager, she started a STEM4Girls club as she believed girls in her high school’s tech student association were not being heard. She is also founder and president of VCU’s Association for Computing Machinery - Women (ACM-W) chapter and a member of VCU's computer science student advisory board.
