Krzysztof “Krys” Cios, Ph.D., D.Sc., M.B.A., professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science in the VCU College of Engineering, has been named an IEEE Fellow for 2020. He is being recognized for outstanding contributions to data mining and machine learning.
The IEEE grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE board of directors on a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
“The distinction of IEEE fellow came as a complete surprise, as only last month I was recognized with a Life Senior Member status that gave me access to all IEEE publications and privileges. Getting a Fellow grade for contributions in the important field of machine learning, which penetrates all aspects of our daily lives and businesses, made it doubly exciting and rewarding. As an example, thanks to machine learning, more and more medical diagnoses are being automated — and gaining government approval! I thank my graduate students, as this state-of-the-art work is only possible with their contributions,” Cios said.
Cios’ research focuses on data mining and knowledge discovery, and various types of machine learning algorithms: from clustering to rule learning to neural networks. He is the author of three books and more than 200 journal and conference papers, several of them recognized with best paper awards. He has frequently applied his machine learning algorithms to solve problems in medicine and biology. His research has been funded by NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force and NATO.
Cios has been the recipient of numerous honors including the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. He is a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
