VCU students receive AIChE awards

Three chemical and life science engineering students have won awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Nastassja Lewinski, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering, is the faculty adviser to the AIChE@VCU student chapter and nominated the three for these awards.

Kimberly Cox, a senior, has been selected for a Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Award for academic achievement and involvement in student chapter activities. She is one of 15 students nationwide to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

“I’m excited and grateful,” Cox said. “I want to thank Dr. Lewinski for encouraging and helping me through this process.”

Tara McIntosh, a junior, has won the Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award. The award is presented to one active AIChE undergraduate member in each student chapter who has attained the highest scholastic grade-point average during the student’s first two years.

“It’s an honor to receive this award after two years of hard work,” McIntosh said. “I could not have done it without the support of my classmates and professors.”

Ashley Tyson, a first-year student, has won the 2018-19 Freshman Recognition Award, presented to the most active undergraduate member in each student chapter.

“It has truly been an honor working with faculty, students and the community on behalf of AIChE,” Tyson said. “I look forward to continuing my work with the club.”
