Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, Certificate in (post-baccalaureate graduate certificate)

The Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies (GSWS) at Virginia Commonwealth University offers a graduate certificate in gender, sexuality and women’s studies. The certificate requires a total of 15 graduate credit hours, comprised of three core courses and two elective courses. If a student wishes to take courses outside the department for the electives, the student must have prior approval of the GSWS chair or associate chair.

Courses are offered once a year. In general, it will take one year to earn the certificate. University policy permits students to earn the certificate while pursuing another graduate degree. For additional information on this topic, please contact the department.


How to Apply

All graduate applications must be submitted online through the VCU Graduate Admissions website.

The following materials must be submitted:

  1. Online application and application fee
  2. Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended by the applicant
  3. Three references from former instructors (one may be from an employer/supervisor)
  4. Statement of intent (personal statement)
  5. CV/résumé
