Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead joined the Honors College in 2016. She developed the curriculum for Humans of RVA & VCU, which all honors students take during their first year in the Honors College. In addition to teaching multiple sections of HoRVA, she teaches Investigative Inquiry in RVA and topics courses such as Social Justice & the Arts and Storytelling, Presenting, & You.

Ann Marie holds an M.F.A in Theatre Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in English/Secondary Education from LeMoyne College. Prior to her time at the Honors College, she served as Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Performance and Communication Arts Department at St. Lawrence University. She began her work in community engagement at SLU in 2009, where she taught a community engagement course for theatre and communication students. That led to her later work as an Civic Engagement Associate for St. Lawrence’s Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership.

Furthermore, Ann Marie has presented on the Humans of RVA & VCU curriculum at national conferences such as the Honors Education at Research Universities conference and the National Collegiate Honors Council conference. Her current research interests include best practices in honors education; engaged pedagogies; and the intersections of high impact practices such as experiential learning, community engagement, and city-as-text curricula.

In addition to writing for an academic audience, Ann Marie is a playwright, children’s book author, and a contributor for HuffPost. Her play Have You Filled a Bucket Today? has performed across the U.S. and had its international premiere in Queensland, Australia.
