Closing and Returning Information

Spring 2021 Housing Clarification

On Jan. 12 VCU President, Dr. Rao sent an email announcing the adjustments to the spring 2021 semester. This does not affect residential move-in and we look forward to welcoming students for the spring semester.

Students Returning to Campus

As responsible members of the VCU community, we must all continue to do our part to promote health and safety for ourselves and others. To stay in on-campus housing or return from break, residents must complete the following tasks:

  • Take a COVID-19 Entry Test and receive negative results; VCU will mail a self-administered test kit at no cost to all on-campus residents. Entry test kits will contain saliva-based PCR tests approved for self-administration. Saliva tests are easy and comfortable to perform and do not require a clinician to administer. PCR tests are the most reliable COVID-19 tests. To receive the test kit, follow instructions at vcu.edu/springtesting. Residents will receive an email on Dec. 28 outlining instructions on how to receive their test kits. Before the test kit arrives, learn how to administer the COVID-19 salvia test by watching the COVID-19 CRL Clear How-To instructional video.
  • Complete the Responsible Together Course (available in Blackboard beginning on Jan. 4, 2021) and attest to course completion and personal compliance with safety protocols. Visit the Responsible Together Course Information page for more details.
  • Complete daily health checks by visiting dailyhealth.vcu.edu or clicking CampusReady in your VCUMobile app. Residents returning in January will need to start completing their daily health check after they take their COVID-19 Entry Test. Residents who were approved to stay on campus during the break will need to complete their daily health checks for the dates they were approved to stay regardless if they are not on campus. Spring 2021 residential daily health checks will no longer occur through residents’ Kallaco account and will redirect to dailyhealth.vcu.edu.
  • Participate in mandatory asymptomatic surveillance testing. To monitor COVID-19 within the VCU community, VCU will continue to randomly sample asymptomatic VCU community members for testing each week. Starting Jan. 19, asymptomatic surveillance testing will be mandatory for residential students, students who attend on-campus classes and student employees who work on campus. VCU will contact you by email if and when you are selected to participate. If you are selected to participate, you must schedule your test and attend your testing appointment.
  • Use Entry Pass. Entry Pass is a digital tool that shows if you are in compliance with completing daily health checks and/or asymptomatic surveillance testing. Entry Pass is available in the VCUMobile app and will soon be available online. Starting Jan. 25, all students and employees will be required to use Entry Pass to access certain VCU facilities. Think of Entry Pass as a “fast pass.” Those who complete their daily health check and comply with asymptomatic surveillance testing, will use Entry Pass to more easily access certain campus facilities. Students and employees without an Entry Pass, as well as those who do not complete their daily health check or do not comply with surveillance testing, may face building access restrictions and/or disciplinary action; building access will require a safety protocol review with an entry attendant and, in some cases, building access may be denied.

Students wishing not to return to campus

We understand that your instructional format may have changed your interest in remaining in on-campus housing. If you would like to cancel your housing contract, please complete the Cancel Spring 2021 Housing Form by Thursday, Jan. 21 at noon. Completing this form will cancel your housing for the rest of your contract length.  Students who choose to cancel their contract must complete their at-home COVID-19 Entry Test and receive a negative result and complete their Responsible Together Course on Blackboard to sign-up for a move-out time slot. Students that choose to cancel their Spring 2021 housing must schedule to move-out of their room by Monday, Jan. 25. Move-out information will be sent to your VCU email once your cancelation has been processed.

Students requesting to cancel their contract after Thursday, Jan. 21 will not be automatically approved for cancellation and will need to use the formal request cancelation process on the Resource page. Requests submitted after Thursday, Jan. 21 at noon will be reviewed on a case by case basis and are not guaranteed cancelation of the housing contract.

Sign-up for a Move-in/out Time Slot

To sign-up for a move-in/out time slot, residents will need to complete:

  • The Spring Return to Campus Student Training
  • Take their COVID-19 Spring Entry Test and receive a negative test result.

Once these tasks are completed, Residential Life and Housing will send an email to residents' VCU emails with a link to sign-up for a Move-in time slot and additional move-in instructions. Time slots will be available from Friday, Jan. 15 - Monday, Jan. 29.

It takes 1-2 business for these results of student requirements to be uploaded to the VCU system. Students will receive instructions on how to sign-up for a move-in/move-out time slot once their results have been registered in VCU's system.

If the university returns to in-person in March, will students be able to move back in if they have in-person courses?

If a student cancels their housing contract, they can reapply for housing during the spring semester by emailing vcuhousing@vcu.edu. However, the need to return to campus should be factored into the decision to cancel. There is no guarantee that students will receive the same housing assignment, and assignments are based on availability.
