About the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowships

Welcome to the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowships training program website.  The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition offers the following fellowship programs:

The fellowship programs provides experiences at both the VCU Medical Center and Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center.

The program involves a comprehensive training package designed to provide Level 1 training, as defined by the joint task force on training in gastroenterology, in all areas related to gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. In addition, Level 2 training in hepatology/transplant-hepatology, biliary diseases and nutrition is also available to the majority of fellows. The division has a long-standing training pathway, funded by the National Institutes of Health, for selected candidates to prepare for a career in research-oriented academic gastroenterology and hepatology. Both the clinical and academic tracks have been active for more than 20 years and have produced a large number of excellent clinical gastroenterologists as well as leaders in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.

The mission of the fellowship program is to train and foster the development of future leaders in academic gastroenterology and to train future generations of gastroenterologists/hepatologists who will not only be skilled in the procedural aspects of the specialty but also have a strong base in the cognitive aspects of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.
