A floating classroom

In 1607, the first permanent English settlement in the new world was established at Jamestown by the mouth of the James River. Capt. John Smith was the first white man to explore the James and see its underwater grasses and animals.

More than 400 years later, groups of students from Prince George High School have been sharing that same experience as part of a study of migratory fish populations, led by Anne Wright, Coordinator of Life Sciences Outreach Education for Virginia Commonwealth University's Rice Center in Charles City County.

Last Friday, 11 statistics students from the high school boarded a Chesapeake Bay Foundation boat for a crash course on the James River and Chesapeake Bay ecosystems and a data gathering excursion.
