MSIP 2021 Program Dates

For six weeks, under the guidance of the program directors, interns will work on an individual research
project. Interns will conduct research by proposing hypotheses, gathering available data, and analyzing
results to be put into a formal research presentation. Interns will be meeting three times a week, with a
general requirement to dedicate about 20+ hours a week. The time dedicated will be split between
group meetings and independent research. During the last week of the program, the interns will
present their projects to their peers, friends, family, mentors, and the VCU community.
During the program, the interns will have the opportunity to attend weekly seminars and events
sponsored by VCU or by organizations affiliated with VCU. Further information regarding the seminars
and events will be provided to the interns once the program begins.
Unfortunately at this time, VCU MSIP will not be able to offer the interns a stipend.

Q: How has the program been affected by COVID-19?
A: The internship is now offered virtually. The students will perform research without hands-on-lab experience. The interns will receive lectures from experts in different areas of medicine.
Q: Who is eligible to apply?
A: High school students, preferably rising juniors and seniors, in the Greater Richmond Area are encouraged to apply.
Q: Is there an application fee or tuition to participate in the program?
A: No, the application does have any fee and it is available now. The program also does not have a cost.
Q: Will shadowing experience be included in the internship?
A: Due to safety concerns regarding COVID-19, shadowing will not be offered as a part of the 2021 summer internship.
Q: Is this internship only for Virginia students?
A: Yes, currently this internship is only offered to students in the counties surrounding the greater Richmond, Virginia area
Q: What is the time average time commitment for the program?
A: Typically, interns will meet for 3 hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In addition to meeting times, students will be conducting independent research.
