Professional Learning Opportunities

The Office of Strategic Engagement customizes professional learning opportunities focused on creating equity in schools and communities through culturally responsive best practices explicitly focused on educator and community implicit biases. Our professional learning opportunities reflect VCU’s I-cubed efforts of urban transformation through collaborations and partnerships with local schools and communities focused on topics of diversity, equity and inclusion for Black and LatinX school children. Professional learning opportunities are designed for pre-service and current PreK-12 teachers and leaders with intentional purpose on addressing the racial, socio-economic and cultural inequities within Richmond area schools.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Culturally responsive best practices
  • Understanding implicit biases
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Leading in diverse communities

Highlighted Professional Learning opportunities ready for customization:

Racial Equity: Power, Privilege, and Perspective: Engage in important conversations to include facilitated discussions about power, privilege and white fragility. Participants will utilize self-reflection to analyze how values, experiences, assumptions, and environment influence student learning. Particular emphasis will be on understanding and valuing perspectives from a racial lens.

Culturally Responsive Practice: Relationships Matter: Participants engage in self-reflection to examine culture from a personal viewpoint after which cultural assumptions, stereotypes, and attitudes will be explored to facilitate a deeper understanding and appreciation for those from diverse backgrounds.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Why DEI?: Reflection and analysis of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts will be examined; best practices will be shared to promote more equitable outcomes for all members of the organization.

Anti-Racist Lecture Series

Antiracist educators engage in practices to dismantle systems that perpetuate inequities for students of color. This seminar series will enhance culturally responsive practices and provide intentional professional learning opportunities for our signature programs.

Summer Learning Academy

The VCU Summer Learning Academy explores critical topics highlighting restorative justice, English language learner best practices, mindfulness, blending technology with instruction, engaging black girls in school, co-planning and teaching, exploring urban literacy education and much more.

Globalization in Higher Education Series

The International Education Studies Center, which is affiliated with the School of Education, is hosting the very first Globalization in Higher Education series. The goal of this series is to prepare U.S. university campuses and larger communities to support international students to ensure their success both academically and socially. This series will offer 9 sessions September 2020 - May 2022.

Strategies to Promote a Diverse PK-12 Teacher Workforce Series

The Minority Educator Recruitment, Retention and Equity Center in partnership with the Office of Strategic Engagement are launching the first Strategies to Promote a Culturally Diverse PK-12 Teaching Workforce series. This series will address attracting and supporting educators of color through a culturally responsive lens.
