Substitute Teaching the VCU Way

Program Goals

The goal of Substitute Teaching the VCU Way is to recruit and prepare VCU students to serve as substitute teachers in area schools.

Substitute Teaching the VCU Way

In Richmond’s surrounding school divisions there is a continual need for engaged, knowledgeable, and caring individuals to serve as substitute teachers. To that end, Substitute Teaching the VCU Way recruits and prepares VCU students to serve as substitute teachers.

The program aims to provide opportunities for VCU students to build professional competencies while working as a substitute teacher in RVA’s local schools. Interested students from all majors who have completed 60 undergraduate credits and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 are eligible to participate.

Benefits for Students:

  • Build professional competencies
  • Earn money on a flexible schedule
  • Support the needs of local PK-12 schools

Benefits for PK-12 Partners:

  • Increased pool of qualified substitutes
  • Professional training for substitutes
  • Ongoing support for substitutes
