When the Wayne Commission formed Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968, they merged two institutions—the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) and Richmond Professional Institute (RPI)—that had longed focused on serving the public good. In creating VCU, the commission saw an opportunity to join two strong institutions that together could accelerate our public mission and lead in solving complex public problems.
On November 30, 2018, the university hosted Commemorating History: Challenges and Opportunities. During this day-long symposium, alumni, students, current and retired faculty and staff, friends and community members examined VCU's connection to the legacies of MCV and RPI, explored how the institution has evolved across five decades, considered our achievements as well as our complicated and difficult history, and discussed how we commemorate history on campus.
Thank you for your support and helping us reflect on 50 years as one institution.
