Admissions and Tuition

Tuition costs are determined ny the VCU Student Accounting Tuition & Fees web site. To determine your approximate tuition and fees for the program for which you are applying, please use the tuition calculator.

Under the "Select Program" pull-down menu, choose "Graduate Masters - Patient Counseling" even if you are applying for the Post baccalaureate Certificate in Patient Counseling program.

Students in Patient Counseling may qualify for Federal Financial Aid assistance. For more information, contact the VCU Department of Financial Aid.

Scholarships

A limited amount of scholarship assistance is available through various scholarships depending upon student candidacy. Interested students should submit an electronic letter requesting financial assistance to the Education Administrator and Director of Education in the Department of Patient Counseling

Student must be enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Education training program

Alexander F. Tartaglia Student Scholarship

Student must be enrolled in the Graduate level Master of Science Program Internship component of program 

Alexander F. Tartaglia Certified Educator Scholarship

Student must be a selected student committed to the Clinical Certified Educator training and have met with an ACPE regional candidacy committee

Student is enrolled in the Patient Counseling Department Certificate and/or Master of Science Internship

Commonwealth of VA 

Student is enrolled at the graduate level Patient Counseling Department program and student must be enrolled in the Masters of Science Internship

Scholarship Applications and Disbursement 

Scholarships are explained in a student’s letter of acceptance into the program. Student must submit a letter of need upon acceptance to program.  Letters of need are viewed and considered during the committee process for scholarship disbursement decisions.  

Scholarships are announced by a letter of notification to student during the 2nd week of a student’s program. Student must sign and return before or on deadline date. Scholarships are processed by the Graduate School as submitted by department. 



Certificate in Patient Counseling (Post Baccalaureate Graduate Certificate)

  1.   3. A personal interview with one or more faculty members.
  4. International students need an external credential evaluation to complete an application. WES, ECE, SPANTRAN, and AACRO are recommended NACES providers. Send evaluations to:

Master of Science in Patient Counseling

Admission Requirements

  1.   3. Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or at least one year of graduate education with a grade-point of "B" or better.
  4. A personal interview with a faculty admissions committee.
  5. International students for whom English is a second language should submit scores at an acceptable level (minimum of 550) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and give additional evidence of ability to communicate in English with facility and Skype interview. (Graduate and international Recruitment and Admissions). International students need an external credential evaluation to complete an application. VCU Graduate School Application Fee
All VCU Graduate School applications require an application fee, which is payable on-line to the Graduate School at the time the application is submitted. The amount of this fee is established yearly and will be communicated in all correspondence with prospective students. The current application fee is $70.00. This fee is non-refundable unless the program to which you are applying is cancelled.  If you prefer to pay by check, send a check or money order, payable to VCU, to the address below.  Please include the student's full name in the memo line of the check or money order.

  • Deadlines & Restrictions for Domestic and International Admissions

    • General Application Deadlines
      • Completed applications received prior to December 1st will receive a decision by February 28th for the following Fall chaplain residency program.
      • Completed applications received by February 1st will receive a decision by March 15th for the following Fall chaplain residency program.
      • Completed applications received after February 1st will be processed on a rolling admissions basis.
      • Summer Certificate in Patient Counseling applications received by December 1st will receive a decision by January 30th.
      • Summer Certificate in Patient Counseling applications received by January 15th will receive a decision by February 28th.
      • Response to all rolling admissions applications will be provided within 60 days of receipt of the completed application.

    Restrictions
    No application for any program will be considered more than one year prior to anticipated semester of entry.

    International Admissions Guidelines

    The application deadline for international applicants is one year prior to the general application deadline if applicant does not have a valid VISA for studying and working in the U.S. It is the responsibility of the applicant to work with the VCU International Office of Admissions regarding this process.  Applications will not be reviewed until the department receives notification of eligibility from the International Office of Admissions.
