About Our Department
Image of Excellence
The VCU Department of Radiology is dedicated to providing patients with the highest standard of care and innovative procedures. Through our exciting clinical, technological, education and research initiatives, the department remains at the forefront of academic radiology departments.
We continue to build on our commitment to clinical excellence with state-of-the-art equipment. Advanced technology is available in all modalities, including breast imaging, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine and ultrasound.
We demonstrate a strong commitment to educational initiatives to attract outstanding residents who graduate at the top of their medical school classes. Upon completion of the program, competitive fellowships and leading medical practices in the U.S. recruit our residents. The department sponsors eight to ten fellowships each year in a variety of subspecialties.
Recognized both nationally and internationally, our faculty radiologists have expertise in a wide range of procedures from breast imaging to interventional radiology and neuroradiology to nuclear medicine. Our specialty-trained radiologists are leaders in innovative techniques, such as uterine fibroid embolization and fetal MRI.

The VCU Department of Radiology research activities receive the support of full-time research scientists. Our faculty receives significant awards for funded research, including from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our research portfolio extends from basic activities to clinical trials, including breast shielding for CT radiation protection, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) in biliary and pancreatic imaging, virtual colonography, and the application of CT in trauma. Our wide range of services and technologies provide value to VCU Health, referring physicians and patients.
We conduct traditional radiology services and many cutting-edge procedures, including thoracic aortic stent grafts, venous ablation, radioimmunotherapy, virtual colonography, coronary artery CT, and breast MRI.
Our facilities include state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic technologies for ultrasound, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, neuroradiology.

The VCU Department of Radiology benefits from a state-of-the-art picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and a voice recognition dictation system. These systems immediately distribute images and reports to more than 1,200 computers throughout the VCU Health System. This reporting allows referring physicians access to images and dictated reports, as soon as they are available.
