General radiology electives give medical students a broad overview of the various disciplines within diagnostic radiology

Overview

Students in the VCU School of Medicine have the option to enroll in the following elective courses:

  • Abdominal imaging
  • Breast imaging
  • Emergency and trauma radiology
  • General radiology
  • Interventional radiology
  • Pediatric imaging
  • Radiology research

The general radiology elective gives students a broad overview of the various disciplines within diagnostic radiology. Students spend time in film interpretation areas and procedure rooms. Students also participate in dedicated didactic lectures that focus on the approach to common problems encountered in clinical practice.

Additional learning opportunities are available during radiology resident and interdisciplinary conferences, as well as teaching and film interpretation sessions with attending radiologists. They also have opportunities to attend case reviews with radiology residents.

Teaching file materials and textbooks are provided. Students are expected to learn the fundamental modalities of diagnostic radiology. Some rudimentary skills in the interpretation of plain films are also be acquired.

A maximum of 16 students may be enrolled in each general radiology elective.
