Become a tutor

Student-Athlete Support Services employs approximately 40-50 tutors in nearly every subject area. SASS tutors promote academic success by helping student-athletes who are experiencing academic difficulty or need additional support to develop academic skills and course-specific knowledge. Training will be provided to tutors to effectively meet the needs of tutees.

Tutors are expected to:


VCU undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students are eligible to apply for tutor positions within the athletic department. Community members who hold a bachelor's degree and have specific expertise are also eligible to apply. To be considered for a position as a subject tutor, all candidates must meet these qualifications:

Pay rate

Lead tutors

Experienced tutors who have worked for VCU Student-Athlete Support Services for at least two semesters are eligible to apply for promotion to the position of lead tutor. Up to four lead tutors will be selected each year from those who apply. Lead tutors will take on additional responsibilities, including assisting with training, observing tutors and developing resources or workshops for students. Lead tutors will receive a $1 per hour pay raise.
