The B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education and Teaching, with a concentration in Engineering Education, prepares undergraduate students to serve as licensed engineering education STEM-related teachers in grades 6-12 schools (a new licensure area), and to serve as educators and leaders in schools and community-based settings. Our program goal is to provide a bridge into this interdisciplinary field by integrating engineering and education concepts to prepare teachers to inspire and engage the next generation of scientists, engineers, explorers and entrepreneurs.
Through the core education curriculum, students:
Our program integrates engineering and education concepts to prepare teachers to inspire and engage the next generation of scientists, engineers, explorers and entrepreneurs. Faculty are part of a scientific community that values discovery and exploration based in science and mathematics as expressed through engineering. The program provides students with a solid foundation in secondary education, engineering, mathematics and sciences necessary to be successful when engaging and introducing engineering to the next generation.
Graduates will be prepared to work in public and private middle and high schools across Virginia, with particular focus in urban and other high-need areas. Graduates will be capable of working with diverse learners and adapting instructional programs based on the needs of the students and clients.
