Dr. Joan B. Johnson has served in the capacity of faculty and university administrator for more than 15 years in Virginia and Indiana. Johnson has an extensive background in teacher preparation, licensure and accreditation. She joins VCU from her role as director for the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Teacher Education. In that role, she provided oversight of university preparation programs for school personnel, including implementation of state and federal regulations to ensure high-quality preparation of teachers, administrators, central office personnel and other educators required by regulation to hold a license to practice in the pre-K through 12th grade schools.
As VCU’s executive director for licensure and accreditation, she will provide leadership to ensure continued national and state accreditation of all educator preparation programs; develop innovative partnerships with challenged schools; provide high-quality support services to students as they advance through academic programs; and oversee the VCU School of Education’s Student Services Center.
