An associate professor in the School of Education’s Department of Counseling and Special Education, Dr. Mary A. Hermann also served as the department chair from August 2010 to June 2015.
Over her career, Hermann’s research has focused on legal and ethical issues in counseling, women’s studies and social justice. She has served as president of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) and co-chair of the SACES Women’s Interest Network. She has also served as chair of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Foundation Board of Directors, as a member of the ACA Ethics Committee and as a member of the ACA 2014 Ethics Revision Task Force.
Prior to joining the faculty at VCU, Hermann served as an assistant professor of counseling and women’s studies at Mississippi State University. Her experience in K-12 education includes teaching French for more than 10 years in public and private schools in New Orleans. Hermann is a licensed attorney, a licensed professional counselor, a national certified counselor, a certified school counselor and a certified yoga instructor.
