Mr. Isom serves as the Director for Human Resources in the division. In his role, he assists departments with the recruitment, onboarding, retention, and separation of all employees, volunteers, and affiliates. Mr. Isom is a graduate of VCU and has worked at the university for 23 years. His previous roles at the university were in Student Health Services, the Office of EEO/AA Services, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the Office of Faculty Recruitment & Retention. Mr. Isom is the father of two (hopefully) future Rams and is a dedicated fan of comics, hip-hop and pro wrestling.
Since 2004, Reuban Rodriguez, Ed.D. has served as the Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students. He supervises departments that contribute to supporting all VCU students, including Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, and Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Emory University, his Master of Science in Urban Studies at Georgia State University, and his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. For the past forty years, he has served in a variety of capacities in higher education. He has served in numerous leadership roles in NASPA. Dr. Rodriguez is a native New Orleanian and enjoys spending time with his wife and son.
With over 20 years of experience in higher education roles ranging from student activities, orientation, leadership & service, career and academic advising and employer development, Joslyn supports the SVP and leadership team with project management, strategic initiatives, and day-to-day Division operations. Mrs. Bedell has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin from the University of Georgia ('99) and a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Vermont ('01).
Mr. Vaeth has worked in a variety of public and private sector finance positions in his nearly 40-year career. Currently, Mr. Vaeth serves as Executive Director of Management and Technology Support Services for the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He is responsible for the Division’s finances, which approximate $70 million in revenue per year, as well as leading the DSA Finance Service Center, a new centralized department that provides financial operation services to all DSA departments.
Mr. Vaeth has worked for VCU for over 25 years, first coming to VCU in 1986 as a Budget Analyst and returning in 1999, eventually moving to DSA in his current role in 2005. In between his two different stints with VCU he worked for a number of Virginia State agencies as well as Media General, a multi-media and communication company based in Richmond, Virginia.
Mr. Vaeth received his B.A. in Management from James Madison University and his M.B.A. from VCU. He is the father of two college graduates, both of whom are now working in the digital marketing field, (and paying their own bills!)
Yiyun Jie, Ph.D., serves as the Director of Assessment for the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University since 2016, leading the Division's effort in establishing a culture of effective assessment for continuous improvement. Yiyun provides leadership, coordination, and technical expertise for program evaluation, learning and development outcome assessment, and other research and accreditation compliance efforts across the Division.
Before coming to Virginia Commonwealth University, Yiyun served as the Office of Institutional Research Director at Alabama State University for four years, providing database management, institutional data analytical, and reporting support for university leaders' policy development and decision-making. Prior to that, she worked as a research analyst in the Office of Academic Planning and Evaluation, supporting academic program reviews and Quality Enhancement Plan.
Her scholarly work was published in internationalization in higher education, cross-border university partnerships, and students' learning and development in postsecondary education.
Yiyun earned her Ph.D. in comparative and international development education with a program evaluation minor from the University of Minnesota. She received her Master's degree in College Student Services and Administration from Oregon State University.
During her time in graduate school, Yiyun worked as a graduate research assistant for the Assessment Committee at the Department of Postsecondary Teaching and Learning. Her work focused on evaluating first-year student success, learning community, and other supplemental instructional program efficiencies, supporting faculty development program on interdisciplinary collaboration, curriculum mapping, and student learning outcome assessment.
Curtis Erwin, Ed.D., has worked for 30+ years in student affairs. Currently, Dr. Erwin serves as Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). A majority of his experience comes through the residential life and housing lens, including when he joined VCU in 2012 as the Executive Director of Residential Life & Housing. In 2016 Dr. Erwin transitioned into the role of Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs, and most recently into the role of Associate Vice Provost (2018). Currently, Dr. Erwin’s portfolio includes University Student Commons & Activities, Residential Life & Housing, New Student & Family Programs, and VCU LEAD. In addition, Dr. Erwin has provided leadership for many external reviews and master planning initiatives.
Prior to his arrival at VCU, Dr. Erwin held positions at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Georgia Southern University, Texas Tech University, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Erwin received his Ed.D. from Georgia Southern University in Educational Administration, his M.S. from Indiana University in College Student Personnel, and his B.A. from Truman State University in Communication. His personal interests in higher education are around first-generation students, student engagement, and change management. He is a proud husband, father of two college students, and a life-long fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Matthew Lovisa currently serves as the Director of Communications for the Division of Student Affairs. He develops the brand identity, communication, marketing and public relations strategies. Mr. Lovisa supervises a team of marketing and communication professionals for the division and the Student Media Center.
Working closely with the Senior Vice Provost of Student Affairs and as a member of the Operations Team and Student Affairs Leadership Team, he helps to develop, strengthen and support the division’s goals. Mr. Lovisa works with the Communications and Marketing Office staff who support the web, graphic design and parent and family communications needs for the division and departments.
Mr. Lovisa has more than ten years of professional experience in the areas of public relations, communications and marketing. Prior to his arrival with the Division, he worked at VCU Massey Cancer Center. Mr. Lovisa received his B.S. in Communication Students from James Madison University and enjoys spending time with his family.
Jihad Aziz, Ph.D., is a graduate of South Carolina State University where he earned a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University and is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Before arriving at VCU, Dr. Aziz worked at Ball State University in Muncie, IN as a staff psychologist and the Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives. Dr. Aziz currently serves as the interim Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs and the Executive Director of University Counseling Services. He is responsible for overseeing University Student Health, Recreational Sports, University Counseling Services, The Well, and Rams in Recovery. Over the course of his career, he has conducted numerous workshops on diversity issues, leadership, and violence assessment.
Dr. Charles (Chuck) Klink has worked for over forty years in student affairs. Currently, Dr. Klink serves as the Senior Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. The division encompasses 16 student-serving departments and 4 administrative support units with over 250 employees and a budget of approximately 70 million dollars.
A psychologist by training, Dr. Klink came to VCU in 2001 as Director of University Counseling Services and was promoted to an Assistant Vice Provost in 2006 and Associate Vice Provost in 2010. He was appointed Interim Vice Provost in 2014 and selected as Vice Provost in 2016 after a national search. In 2017, Dr. Klink was promoted to Senior Vice Provost. Dr. Klink is a member of the president’s cabinet, the provost’s executive group and senior leadership team as well as numerous university committees.
Prior to his arrival at VCU, Dr. Klink held a variety of positions in Student Affairs and Athletics during his eighteen-year tenure at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, he served as an Associate Director/Clinical Director for University Counseling Services, Senior Staff Psychologist, Athletic Departments Substance Abuse Counselor, Disability Support Services Counselor, Residence Life and Housing Area Coordinator, Residence Life and Housing Hall Director, Career Counselor, and Assistant Hall Director. Dr. Klink began his student affairs career working in residential life and new student orientation at a small, private, liberal arts college in Northern Indiana. He has served on threat assessment teams for the last twenty-seven years and currently co-chairs the VCU team.
Dr. Klink received both his M.A. in Counseling and Guidance and Ph.D. in Psychology from Ohio State University and his B.A. in Elementary Education from Goshen College. He is the father of two college graduates, and a college senior.
