Virtual Summer Scholars 2020
We will be sending a more detailed schedule in the coming weeks, but here is an overview of what the online version of Summer Scholars will look like:
You will earn 7 credit hours! This includes two 3-credit classes (see the attached list) and one 1-credit class (UNIV 191: Summer Scholars Program).
The 3-credit classes begin on Thursday, July 9, and end on Friday, August 7 (4.5 weeks); UNIV 191 will begin on Monday, July 6, and will include our program orientation.
Your 3-credit classes are scheduled to meet Monday through Friday, from 9-10:50 a.m. and 1-2:50 p.m. Generally, your professors will only require synchronous meetings (i.e., virtual class sessions) three out of five days per week with asynchronous activities (i.e., working on your own or in small groups) on the alternating days.
UNIV 191 will meet synchronously only one day per week in small groups. It is designed to award you credit for participating in the extracurricular activities that unify this unique experience. For example, we will have:
Workshops such as the Science of Learning (i.e., in college) and Wellness in College. (i.e., mindfulness and stress management)
Team-building activities to get you acquainted with your classmates from afar, so that when you come to campus you already have a group of friends!
Virtual scavenger hunts to get to know VCU and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Organized game nights and movie nights.
Study sessions so that you can work on projects and prepare for tests while having access to your professors, academic coaches, writing consultants, and classmates.
Not all UNIV 191 activities will be required--we know living at home means extra responsibilities. Study sessions and a few workshops are required, but you’ll be able to choose in advance what other events you’d like to join to make your Summer Scholars experience unique to you.
When we say this is a unique opportunity, we really mean it!
