Distinguished Alumni

The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce its inaugural 2020 class of Distinguished Alumni. These designations are honoring the alumni who distinguished themselves in various ways since graduation of at least 15 years before being eligible for election. We acknowledge their accomplishments, including of those alumni who graduated before 1986, which marks the VCU’s Computer Science program accreditation by ABET (the first such program in Virginia). The first three Distinguished Alumni are highlighted below.


Kishau Smith Rogers [View Image]

Ms. Kishau Smith Rogers has over 25 years of experience leading the development of enterprise technology solutions and more than 15 years of entrepreneurial leadership. She is the Founder & CEO of Time Study, Inc., a high-growth startup offering solutions using machine learning, natural language processing and other data science techniques to automatically tell a story of how enterprise employees spend their time. The Time Study platform serves some of the largest health organizations in the US; it recently closed a $1.2M seed fund and is backed by Hearst, Newark Venture Partners, Pipeline Angels, and 37 Angels.

As an active, frequently awarded, technology leader, Kishau has been featured in many national publications including the Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur, Black Enterprise, and NFIB. In her commitment to STEM and leveraging technology for social good, she serves as an advisor to organizations like Think of Us, WAAW Foundation, VCU Department of Computer Science, the first U.S. White House Hackathon for Foster Care and as co-founder and advisor to SheHacks Africa. The latter is a software engineering intensive training to women and girls in three African nations. Kishau also wrote a book covering the intersection of system thinking, machine intelligence, and human intelligence (2020, in press).

Kishau grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia. She splits her time between Richmond and New York, with her husband Bernard and their two kids and two dogs. Follow her on Twitter at @kishau or subscribe to her.

Kishau obtained her B.S. in Computer Science from VCU in 1996.


Pratik Gupta [View Image]

Mr. Pratik Gupta is the Chief Technical Officer for IBM Hybrid Cloud Management and the Chief Architect of Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management in the IBM Cloud and Cognitive Software Organization. Prior to that, he was Vice President, IBM Cloud Platform responsible for IBM Public Cloud Portfolio Management. Pratik was named an IBM Distinguished Engineer in 2009.

Pratik has broad business leadership and technical experience in developing new products that help enterprises transform their IT with Cloud and SaaS. He has managed large, geographically distributed development teams and has strong relationships with enterprise CxOs and industry analysts. Pratik has multiple patents in the areas of Computer Security, Cloud Computing and Systems Management.

Pratik lives with his wife and daughter in Raleigh, North Carolina. He enjoys vacation travel and has visited over 40 countries. He likes hiking, biking and motorcycle riding. He is an avid sports fan and follows Basketball, Tennis, Cricket and other sports; he often travels to world cup games around the world.

Pratik obtained his M.S. in Computer Science from VCU in 1989; his first degree was a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering, and his last an MBA from Duke University.


Dan Shuber [View Image]

Mr. Dan Shuber is a Senior Director of Technology at Capital One - a Fortune 100 Financial Services company. During his 20 years tenure, he has led many strategic technical initiatives including global call center network buildout, middleware layer establishment, and engineering data modeling/machine learning platforms. He leads multiple, large software engineering teams, and is a passionate advocate of workforce diversity and associate empowerment. Before Capital One, Dan held technology leadership roles of increasing responsibility at a State agency, and a $2B retailer.

Throughout his career, Dan has maintained his relationship with VCU. He has worked to provide year-round internship opportunities for students - and ensured their access to mentors. He has championed recruitment of VCU graduates, and local industry participation in Capstone sponsorship and hackathons. Currently, Dan serves on the board of the VCU College of Engineering Foundation.

Dan is a father of five, and when not working enjoys travelling and outdoor activities. He is particularly fond of the National Parks, having rafted the entire Grand Canyon, and hiked in Glacier, Volcanos, Yellowstone, Acadia, Yosemite, and others…

Dan obtained two degrees from VCU: BS degree in Biology, followed by an MS in Math - with a Computer Science emphasis - in 1985.
