Karin Emery is an August 2019 graduate of the Nursing program in the School of Nursing. We asked Dr. Emery about her journey through graduate school and her current career path.

Describe your career path and current occupation.

Pediatric and Adult Emergency Medicine for 8 years, with 6 years of formal nursing administration roles. During that time, I received my MS in Nursing Administration and Leadership from VCU in 2011.

I started the Ph.D. program in 2011 and transitioned to academics 5 years ago. In those 5 years, I have taken on leadership roles within the university. I graduated in 2019 with my Ph.D. and recently assumed the role of Assistant Dean at South Dakota State University, College of Nursing in Brookings, South Dakota.

How did you become interested in this field?

There are so many things about leadership that drew me to the field of administration. For instance, relationships, problem-solving and being a part of transforming practice and improving the workplace. Being involved in leadership provides me a place to utilize my communication skills, be creative, work with teams, and get involved in the business operations. I have been so blessed in that I have been a part of some highly effective and supportive teams.

What was most memorable about your experiences in your VCU graduate program?

Relationships with peers in the program/cohort and working with the faculty.
