The History Graduate Student Association (HGSA) is an independent student group which holds gatherings throughout the school year. It encourages a sense of community within the graduate program by exploring historic sites and events in the Richmond area. All history graduate students are members, invited to events, and encouraged to suggest activities in which they might like the HGSA to take part.
With such a diverse student community, HGSA seeks to organize events and programs which showcase student interests and professional expertise. To this end, HGSA works with students to lead tours for the group of historic sites and museums with which they are familiar. In the past, HGSA has explored the Slave Trail Tour of Shockoe Bottom with Ana Edwards (M.A. '20), taken a day trip to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, and held community potlucks, game nights, and various happy hour events around the city. HGSA is also interested in attending lectures, public history events, and professional development opportunities. Look for a calendar of events each month.
