Recognition and awards

A key component to motivating and retaining good employees is recognition. Recognition can take the form of a memorandum, email or handwritten note, or a more public announcement of a job well done. VCU offers a variety of reward and recognition programs for employees. Current employees and managers can log into for guidelines and related forms for recognizing Classified employees and University and Academic Professionals.

Service Recognition Celebration postponed

VCU’s commitment to a Culture of Appreciation includes the annual presentation of the President’s Awards for Professional and Administrative Distinction and the Dorris Douglas Budd Award for exemplary administrative support.  We look forward to presenting these awards each year as part of our Service Recognition Celebration.

Because we continue in a phased return to campus that prevents us from enjoying large group celebrations, we won’t be holding our traditional Service Recognition Celebration in October. Instead, we will be rescheduling the celebration for this academic year for Spring, 2021, and the President’s Awards and the Dorris Douglas Budd Award presentations will be part of the rescheduled celebration.

More details about the nomination processes and timelines will be provided at a later date.

Annual service recognition celebration

Each year, formal tribute is made acknowledging employee service (in five-year increments). 2019 marks the 48th annual service recognition celebration for VCU and VCU Health faculty and staff with 5 to 55 years of service. This year's celebration took place on October 15th.

Service awards eligibility is calculated from award eligible service only and may not reflect an individuals total state service. For example:

  • Any paid service (including hourly service) at VCU and the VCU Health System is included in calculating eligibility for recognition.
  • Service earned at other state agencies/higher education institutions is not included in calculating eligibility for recognition.

Adjunct Service
Adjunct service counts towards service award eligibility. The employing department/dean's office must notify HR of the eligible service of adjunct employees. Contact Cindi Phares (contact information is below) for more information on calculating adjunct service.
