John F. Kuemmerle, MD, is Chair for the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr. Kuemmerle is a Professor of Medicine and Physiology with Tenure at VCU.

A native of Minnesota, Dr. Kuemmerle received his Bachelor of Sciences degree from the College of William and Mary, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. After a one year General Surgery Internship at West Virginia University, Dr. Kuemmerle came to VCU to continue his surgical training and completed a two-year surgical research fellowship. Subsequently, Dr. Kuemmerle completed a residency in Internal Medicine at VCU, as well as an NIH-sponsored research fellowship in Gastroenterology.

Dr. Kuemmerle joined the faculty at VCU in 1993, with joint appointments in Internal Medicine and Physiology and an appointment on the Graduate Faculty, and has served as the Division of Gastroenterology's Medical Director of the GI Clinic (1993-2001); Fellowship Program Director (1997-2001); Associate Chair of Gastroenterology for Research (2006-2010); and as Vice Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2010-2013).

Dr. Kuemmerle is a distinguished scientist who enjoys a national reputation in his field, and is currently Principal Investigator on an NIH R01 grant and co-Principal Investigator on two additional NIH R01 grants, the Divisional T32 grant and a U01 grant. Dr. Kuemmerle's clinical and research interests focus on inflammatory bowel disease and molecular mechanisms mediating the development of fibrosis, with the long-term goal of developing translational interventions for fibrosis. He has authored over 50 scientific reports, 12 book chapters/reviews, and 80 abstracts. Dr. Kuemmerle serves on several major national committees of the American Gastroenterological Association, including its Leadership Cabinet. He is the Editor for the Online Journals Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Kuemmerle has been a reviewer on the SBIR panel for NIH/NIDDK since 2012, and since 2008 he has been a member of the ABIM Liaison Committee for Recertification.
