Additional gift of land for the VCU Rice Center

September 28, 2010

Virginia Commonwealth University just found itself owning a bunch of swampland along the James River—and couldn’t be happier. The land, about 150 acres in eastern Chesterfield County, will become a living laboratory for scientists.

About half the land is swamp, the rest forest. The property is home to bald eagles, songbirds, wildflowers and other wild inhabitants.

“The land is absolutely lush,” said Len Smock, director of VCU’s Rice Center, a biological field station on the James in Charles City County.
