Peripheral Nerve Surgery

The Department of Neurosurgery is proud to be a leader in the practice and education of peripheral nerve surgery. As a regional referral center, we collaborate with health care providers in orthopaedics, surgical oncology, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation to provide a full range of evaluation, surgical care and rehabilitation of the following peripheral nerve problems:

  • Upper extremity entrapment syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy
  • Lower extremity entrapment syndromes such as peroneal neuropathy
  • Traumatic nerve injuries (Drs. R. Scott Graham and Jonathan Issacs have 20 years of experience repairing the most complex nerve injuries with a team approach)
  • Nerve transfers for restoration of function following spinal cord injury
  • Tumors such as schwannoma and neurofibroma (Drs. R. Scott Graham and Brian Kaplan have extensive experience resecting nerve sheath tumors and sarcomas involving nerves in difficult locations)

Education

Trainees in our residency program gain unparalleled exposure to peripheral nerve operations during their time at VCU. Residents will participate in the following:

  • Decompression of entrapment neuropathies
  • Resection of peripheral nerve tumors
