Jiale (Gary) Hu, PhD, RN

Jiale (Gary) Hu is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research and Global Outreach in the Department of Nurse Anesthesia Virginia Commonwealth University. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Clinical Medicine from the School of Nursing Shanghai Jiaotong University in China and a Doctoral Degree of Philosophy from the School of Nursing University of Ottawa in Canada. He used to work as an anesthesia nurse and executive director of nursing research at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital in China. He developed the first nurse anesthesia education program recognized by the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists in China.
His overall research and teaching interests lie in knowledge translation in health care settings, particularly in anesthesia and pain management settings. His long-term research goal is to promote evidence-based practice implementation in health care settings and advance pain assessment and management in non-verbal patients. He has obtained 42 research grants and 22 travel grants in the USA, China, and Canada as a Principal or Co-Investigator. Also, he obtained one patent, published 99 articles (33 English papers, one French paper, and 65 Chinese papers) in peer-reviewed journals, edited one book chapter, and provided more than 25 oral presentations and over 30 poster presentations in international, national, or local conferences. He also contributes extensively to national or international professional associations and is actively involved in the peer review of journal publications, conference presentations, and research funding.
