Strategies to Promote a Culturally Diverse PK-12 Teaching Workforce Series
The Minority Educator Recruitment, Retention and Equity Center in partnership with the Office of Strategic Engagement are launching the first Strategies to Promote a Culturally Diverse PK-12 Teaching Workforce series. This series will address attracting and supporting educators of color through a culturally responsive lens.
This 5-part series includes a personal/professional intercultural assessment, and microcredential after completion. The Deadline to register is Friday, October, 29th.
All sessions are held on Wednesdays via ZOOM from 4:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

Strategies to Promote a Culturally Diverse PK-12 Teaching Workforce Session Descriptions and Learning Outcomes
This session will examine systems required to promote a culturally diverse K-12 teacher workforce. This includes the role of organizations and systems to attract, support, and retain teachers of color.
- Understand the key stakeholders' role in promoting a diverse K-12 teacher workforce.
- Identify sources at the local, state, and federal level to invest in recruiting and retaining teachers of color.
This session involves community-immersive partnerships that involves school districts, colleges and universities, and communities integrating to develop goals to attract, support, and retain K-12 teachers of color.
- Analyze active involvement in urban and rural communities that builds on the assets of these communities.
- Establish how culturally responsive and sustaining practices can be infused into partnerships.
- Identify how to build and develop Grow Your Own programs.
This session examines the development of teacher residency programs as an alternative pathway to attract, support, and retain teachers of color.
- Understand how to develop partnerships to build a teacher residency program.
- Understand the important features of a teacher residency program.
- Identify resources at the local, state, and federal level to start your own teacher residency program.
This session will focus specifically on culturally competent mentoring and induction models to help improve the experiences of preservice and inservice teachers of color.
- Identify culturally responsive and sustaining mentoring and induction interventions to support teachers of color.
- Unpack how to train and identify exemplary educators as culturally competent mentors who represent the diversity of teacher roles, educational settings, and career goals that our pre-service and in-service teacher of color mentees request.
This session will focus on guides to form groups across common interests. These interests can be racialized or across a more diverse intersectional (e.g., gender, sexual identity, age) membership.
- Understand what are affinity groups and how they can be used to support and retain teachers of color.
- Identify strategies to develop and sustain affinity groups for teachers of color.
