Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing


Overview

The Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is funded by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide training and technical assistance in the area of deafness and hearing loss.  Assistance is available to local public school systems as well as state-operated programs including early intervention through the Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VNOC) in areas such as identification, assessment (educational, psychological), communication of children across the spectrum of modalities (listening and spoken language, American Sign Language, Signed English, etc.), specific needs of children with amplification including cochlear implants, and instructional strategies.

Major Activities

  • Provide technical assistance in the areas of implementing assistive technology, accommodations, amplification, access to the general curriculum, specialized instruction, transition, sign language support, listening and spoken language support, and support learning for students utilizing various modalities.
  • Management and coordination of consultations performed by the Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VNOC).
  • Coordinate/conduct professional development on a variety of topics related to the complex needs of educating children who are deaf and hard of hearing which may include:  
    • See-the-Sound Visual Phonics©
    • Center on Literacy and Deafness Reading Instructional Interventions
    • Post-Secondary Transition
    • Listening and Spoken Language
    • Cued Speech 
    • Sign Language 
  • Coordination of the annual statewide professional development institute to increase the knowledge and skills of school-based professionals who work directly with students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Collaboration on Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Projects for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
