Many of us can agree that this year has been unlike any other.

We have each been met with circumstances that have challenged us in different ways. One might think, “How can I take care when there’s so much happening in my friendships, family, community, or even the world? How can I take care of myself when there’s so much work to be done?” Challenging circumstances require us to call us to draw on resources for learning, growing, and building connection. This is why we're offering a special 4-week mindfulness training course to help build resilience and well-being during this time.

Mindfulness has been shown to improve our responses to stress, anxiety, pain, depression, and issues with sleep. Our program, Mindfulness Training in Turbulent Times: Tending to Our Hearts and Minds When We Most Need Them, is an interactive group program based on practices of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We have specially tailored this program to address our present circumstances. Topics will include: mindful consumption, mindfulness in the face of uncertainty, mindfulness of emotions, mindfulness of thoughts, mindfulness for mental and physical health, and mindful compassion.

This program consists of 4 weekly, 2-hour interactive group classes, with workbook materials and audio recordings for daily home practice. Program registrants will receive Zoom links and program materials via email by Friday, February 5, 2021.

VCU students, faculty and staff who complete this program will be eligible to join The Health Promotion and Well-being Center's Mindful Ambassador Program coming this Spring. For details check out The Well's website at thewell.vcu.edu or email Mia Liadis at liadisa@vcu.edu.

Mindfulness Training in Turbulent Times is not a replacement for clinical mental health therapy. Individuals facing the following conditions are recommended to have a strong mental health support team before beginning Mindfulness Training: recent history of substance abuse, severe PTSD, and/or suicidal tendencies.

Please note that registration for this offering often fills. If a schedule conflict arises that will prevent you from attending, please email Jessica Norman (normanj3@vcu.edu) to let her know so that we can cancel your registration and admit someone from our waiting list. Thank you!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at normanj3@vcu.edu.
