Mission, Vision and Values

Our Mission

Through sports, fitness, recreation, and adventure, we empower all individuals to optimize their well-being, build community, learn through play, and reach their own developmental goals.

Our Vision

Making VCU a healthier and happier place to learn, work, and grow.

Our Values

Our programs and facilities are places where individual and cultural identities are valued, supported, and welcomed.

We recognize the importance of balance in all aspects of life and provide the tools to pursue a life of wellness.

With a mindset of continual improvement, we strive for excellence in the quality of our facilities, programs, and delivery of services.

We promote lifelong learning and personal development through opportunities that build a strong body and mind.

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our practices and best utilizing our resources to help us grow towards a more sustainable future.

As an integral part of the greater university community, we foster collaborative efforts to achieve a shared common vision where ideas and relationships can grow.

We provide experiences that support and enrich lives through play.

Social Justice Statement

We truly believe that recreation is a universal right and that sports, fitness, and outdoor adventure have the ability to bridge differences, encourage dialogue, foster resilience, and build healthier and happier communities. But these outcomes are not a given. They are a choice. All of us have to choose to create an environment that is welcoming, safe, and inclusive for all members of our community. We acknowledge oppression and systemic issues of inequality affect individuals with varied and intersecting marginalized identities. We especially want to acknowledge and support the African-American and Black community at this time because Black lives really do matter.

Within Recreational Sports, we will continue to reflect upon how we actively work to uphold and further our values, and we accept the challenge issued by our university president, Dr. Michael Rao, to further the cause of racial justice and promote inclusion and equity. We must be willing to consider how our own systems, policies, programs, and daily choices either further or inhibit the ideals of VCU to "provide a climate of inclusion [and] a dedication to addressing disparities."

If you have suggestions or guidance on how we can foster a more inclusive environment or have positive stories of inclusion in VCU Recreational Sports, we welcome your feedback: Creating Inclusive Environments
