COVID-19 can have serious, life-threatening complications, and there is no way to know how COVID-19 will affect you. If you contract COVID-19, you can spread the disease to friends, family, and others around you.

Millions of people in the United States have received COVID-19 vaccines since they were authorized for emergency use by the FDA. These vaccines have undergone and will continue to undergo the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history, including both established and new safety monitoring systems and practices.

Based on what we know about vaccines for other diseases and early data from clinical trials, experts believe that getting a COVID-19 vaccine also helps keep you from getting seriously ill, even if you do contract COVID-19.

Getting vaccinated may also protect people around you, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
