About

The Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture (formerly the School of Mass Communications), founded in 1978, is one of the largest units of the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences. We offer a professional undergraduate and graduate education — not just training — in an environment that values the strong foundation of liberal arts and sciences so necessary for professional communicators.

Mission Statement

The Robertson School inspires and empowers students to be transformative media innovators while continuing to be a thought leader in a changing communication environment.

The School accomplishes its mission through immersive teaching, quality research and professional scholarship. The School explores and engages local and global communities in advertising, journalism, public relations and other emerging communication fields.

Core Values

The School values truth, ethics, creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, collaboration and diversity. The School practices shared governance in decision-making.

Robertson School of Media and Culture at VCU.

The Robertson School is made up of 26 faculty serving more than 900 undergraduate majors and minors and graduate students. With smaller classes, we get to know our students, help them grow, hone their skills and prepare for the industry. With concentrations in Advertising, Journalism, Media Production and Public Relations and class specialized in strategy, storytelling, media projection, your skills become cutting edge. The Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture offers a B.S. degree in Mass Communications and a Minor in Media Studies. The School has around 839 undergraduate majors and minors. About half of the undergraduate students are Foundation students, meaning they have declared mass communications as their major, but they have not yet been accepted into the School.
