Sofia Hiort-Wright, Ph.D.

Sofia Hiort-Wright, Ph.D., joined the VCU athletics department full time in 2002. She oversees all support services for VCU student-athletes, provides academic and personal counseling, and monitors the academic progress and eligibility of the athletes under NCAA rules.

A former women’s tennis player for the Rams and a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, Hiort-Wright received her bachelor’s from VCU in 1998, her master’s in social work in 1999 and her Ph.D. in education in 2006.

Hiort-Wright is a native of Uppsala, Sweden, and spent eight years on the country’s national team. Hiort-Wright and her husband, Mervyn, have two children, Olivia and Noah.

Kasey Sandvig Mattison joined the VCU athletics department full time in 2007. She serves as a tutor coordinator and teaches a peer mentoring class. In this role, Mattison works with VCU’s student-athletes to organize, plan and achieve the academic goals of both the student and the athletics department.

Mattison played four years of women’s soccer at VCU, and was part of two NCAA Tournament runs for the Rams. She is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics.

A Richmond native, Mattison earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from VCU in 2005 and her master’s in counseling education from VCU in 2008. Mattison and her husband, Justin, reside in Richmond.
