Jamie Cage, Ph.D., joined the faculty at the VCU School of Social Work as an assistant professor in August 2017. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Cage views educational experiences and attainment as promising mechanisms to mitigating the effects of childhood trauma. Her research aims to modify the impact of childhood maltreatment, child welfare involvement, and other adverse experiences on poor psychosocial outcomes and health disparities, by identifying educational pathways that promote healthy outcomes and adaptive functioning. Her long-term goal is to develop interventions to be administered within school systems to support the optimal development of children and adolescents who have experienced trauma.
Dr. Cage is a core member of the Disrupting the Criminalization of Trauma in Education Core within the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation (iCubed). The core explores the criminalization of trauma as a barrier to educational excellence for Black girls. The core aims to identify alternative educational interventions and strategies to the current ways of addressing trauma by emphasizing the importance of healing practices that foster optimal health and well-being for Black girls who experience trauma.
She is also an affiliate faculty member with the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention (CCEP) and the Innovation in Child and Family Wellness Research Group (Innovative Wellness). CCEP was established in 2001 to conduct research and provide innnovative, evidence-based programs and interventions to reduce health disparities and promote healthy youth, families, and communities. Innovative Wellness seeks to offer innovative solutions to prevent adverse childhood experiences and promote child and family well-being through the development and dissemination of empirically-based knowledge, practice, and policy.
