Graduate assistantships are an instrumental part of the CSL experience. While not required, nearly every CSL student over the past decade has benefited from a graduate assistantship. These experiences prepare students for a future in the sport industry, build their resume and develop their network.

VCU Student-Athlete Support Services

 

Description of the Job:

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the daily operations of the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) during the 2022-23 academic year.

 

SASS is committed to providing the resources to inspire student-athletes to achieve their full potential academically, personally, and professionally during their VCU career. The office supports the university’s Quest for Distinction and the Department of Athletics’ Strategic Plan through uncompromised integrity and the passionate pursuit of academic excellence, while valuing diversity and inclusion. The Graduate Assistant will collaborate with academic coordinators to assist students in the development of educational plans, ensure that university policies and NCAA rules and regulations regarding academics are being followed, and that students are successfully completing requirements for a their degree. Additional duties include:

  • Work 20 hours per week in the academic computer lab (occasional weekend/evening hours);
  • Show up on time and keep a consistent weekly schedule;
  • Monitor computer lab making sure students are working and being productive;
  • Sign students in/out of study hall;
  • Keep all student information confidential;
  • Create documents/schedules using Excel and Word;
  • Create incoming student folders and recruit visit bags;
  • Help update bulletin boards;
  • Run errands across campus for advisors;
  • Participate in all events put on by SASS; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Athletics Department Leadership Internship

 

Description: The Athletics Leadership Intern will support the comprehensive student-athlete leadership program and initiatives surrounding the student-athlete experience.  This position will research, plan, and coordinate programming and logistics that directly supports student-athlete welfare, life skills, and personal development. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the day of day logistics and operations of student-athlete development
  • Research leadership strategies, programming, and development to support the new Spider Athletics Leadership Initiative
  • Coordinate large scale leadership events, award celebrations, and guest speakers
  • Assist with advising the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Track and monitor data of post-graduation and internship plans
  • Monitor support and usage of professional opportunities on campus and provide additional communications as needed
  • Create communications plan for leadership program implementation to key constituent groups
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new programs and services related to leadership and student-athlete welfare
  • Contribute to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by willingly performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

University of Richmond Academic Support for Athletics

 

This position will provide assistance and support to all members of the Academic Support Staff for Athletics.

 

Study Hall is a major component of the graduate assistantship.  The purpose of study hall is to provide a structured environment that fosters both academic discipline and accountability among all student-athletes.  Study Hall Monitors promote a collaborative learning environment for student-athletes who are required to complete study hall hours.  Students required to complete study hall hours have been deemed at-risk by the academic support staff at The University of Richmond. Study Hall positions require a willingness to work with a diverse population of student athletes, in an environment in which many student athletes do not wish to be present.  It will be your goal to engage student athletes to want to learn how to become better students.  Study Hall is held during the day and nighttime hours.    

 

Additional responsibilities could include tutoring, mentoring student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, assisting with coordinating/supervising study halls, assisting with on-campus recruiting, assist with scheduling of academic tutors, prepare academic reports/ assessments, assist with coordinating travel/excuse letters and all other duties as assigned by the academic support staff. Additionally, graduate assistants will assist in all facets of the Student Athlete Development/Life Skills Program. 

 

Preference is given to those students with specific academic skill sets.  Previous experience as a tutor in a subject specific field (Math, Science, Foreign Language, English, Economics, Accounting, etc.) is preferred.

VCU Business Office

Description of the Job:

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist with daily Athletics Business Office operations and help create an environment of excellent customer service and professionalism.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 

  • Initiating purchase requisitions for goods and services in eVA;
  • Initiating purchase requisitions with a Purchasing Card, as well as allocating Purchasing Card expenses on a monthly basis;

Randolph-Macon College - Administrative Assistant

This position will afford hands-on experience as well as in-depth knowledge of the administrative functions of personnel in an intercollegiate athletic program. The Graduate Assistant will be exposed to all aspects of an NCAA Division III athletic program, including but not limited to facilities, games management, and marketing, and promotions.

This position will give a primary focus to event management and game-day operations for a variety of sports teams. Providing a high level of supervision and leadership to student workers is also a key focus of this position.

Description

Women’s Lacrosse Graduate Assistant Coach

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Physical Education Staff member will work to develop the mind and character of the student-athlete. Primary responsibility is to coach/teach student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition.  Student athletes receive academic credit for participation in the varsity athletic program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following)

 

Assist the head coach with the following:

 

  1. Teaching the fundamentals of the sport by providing hands-on instruction to athletes to enhance skills and knowledge.  Involves presenting verbal and written materials, demonstrating proper techniques, and providing feedback to enhance performance. 

 

  1. Instruct team members individually and in groups and demonstrate game techniques.  May manage a designated skill development area or group of positions (forwards, midfield, defenders, and goal keepers, etc.)

 

  1. Devising and implementing game strategies and position assignments and instructing student athletes accordingly.

 

  1. Takes an active role in game day strategy and instructing student athletes accordingly.

 

  1. Instruct athletes on physical health and safety.

 

  1. Plan practice sessions and game plans in accordance with NCAA and Conference regulations.

 

  1. Scouting opponents as necessary to teach appropriate game strategies to players.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Recruiting qualified student athletes which could include: travel to high schools and games, making and maintaining contact with high school coaches, and making personal contact with prospective student athletes.
  2. Other duties as assigned by the Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach.

 

  1. Assisting with team travel, which could include driving a van.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The duties of this job are performed in a wide variety of settings.  Most of the work is done on various athletic surfaces.  Travel by car is a necessary part of the job and may require several hours of driving over the course of a few days.  Occasional lifting or movement of materials weighing up to 75 pounds is necessary (usually for distances less than fifty yards).

POSITION TITLE

 POSITION SUMMARY

 

Provides assistance to the Athletic Communications/Public Relations unit within the Department of Athletics.  Assists with organization and preparation of statistics and game materials as well as the production of feature content on the website.

 

 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Organizes statistics for media notes and website usage.
  • Retrieves historical data and assists with maintenance of records for all 17 varsity athletic programs.
  • Edits game notes and features.
  • Prepares game day materials such as roster cards and statistics sheets.
  • Produces feature content (video and written) for athletic department website.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

VCU Athletics Compliance Graduate Assistant

 

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Compliance Office during the 2022-23 academic year.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Reviewing countable athletically related activities records and analyzing data using ARMS and NCAA Compliance Assistant software;
• Monitoring countable athletically related activities and voluntary activities;
• Maintaining student-athlete files and insuring that all required NCAA and A-10 documentation are up to date;
• Researching NCAA rules and regulations;
• Assisting with interpretive issues of NCAA rules and regulations;
• Assisting with auditing of various compliance areas as assigned;
• Assisting in researching and compiling materials for Coaches’ rules education sessions;
• Utilizing Compliance Assistant software (CAi) to input student-athlete and team data; and
• Other projects and duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

• Admittance into a VCU graduate program; and

Graduate Assistant - Richmond Flying Squirrels (Richmond, VA)

Job Description:                

Join one of the most exciting teams in baseball! The Richmond Flying Squirrels are a Double A Minor League Baseball team based in Richmond, Virginia. The Diamond, located in the heart of the city, is a premier sports and entertainment venue where fans and families come to watch the Flying Squirrels play. We have FUNN in all we do!

The Richmond Flying Squirrels are currently seeking a Graduate Assistant, who will be an important part of reaching the team goals for the 2023 season. Through sales calls, meetings with businesses and organizations throughout the region, and activating promotions and community outreach, candidates will be expected to learn quickly and apply acquired knowledge about the organization to become a productive and effective member of the team.

Duties:  

  • Assist multiple departments with the daily operations of the ballclub
  • Participate fully in all aspects of the sales process, including making outgoing calls and setting up meetings and appointments with potential clients
  • Perform in lead role with various in-game Corporate Sales programs
  • Assist the Community Relations Department with community events and mascot appearances
  • Assist the Promotions Department with execution of various promotional activities both during and outside of game dates
  • Learn day-to-day operations of baseball with various roles during VCU Baseball games.
  • Assist with the coordination of Hospitality Functions for sponsors (game-day and non-game day)
  • Provide a high level of customer service, client fulfillment and hospitality to current and prospective new clients
  • Help develop and generate new business, and maintain a network of perspective clients through participation in local community events
  • Maintain on-going recap files for all sponsored elements of the game day presentation and coordinate post-season reports for team sponsors

Leona Marketing Group Graduate Assistant Position - Fall 2021 to Spring 2022

The Leona Marketing Group is seeking a highly motivated and self-driven individual seeking to expand their knowledge of college athletics through the world of multimedia rights, ticketing sales and service and outfitting and equipment. This individual will gain a behind-the-scenes perspective of how schools and conferences enhance their external revenue streams and structure third-party contracts. Additionally, this graduate assistantship will provide the individual an opportunity to network with key college athletics personnel across the industry. This graduate assistantship will consist of the following, but not limited to:

  1. Assist in the development of proposals and presentations targeted to college athletics directors and conference commissioners
  2. Assist in research and formulation of the MAS Evaluation for partners schools (The MAS Evaluation is a tool used to examine revenue generation and growth opportunities for our clients)
  3. Research and enhance the current database of all potential multimedia rights and outfitting and equipment deals for Division I schools
  4. Work with the team to research potential client leads as necessary

VCU Athletics is seeking graduate assistants to assist in the daily operations of the Development area during the 2022-23 academic year.
Specifically, the Ram Athletic Fund Graduate Assistant will serve an important role as a liaison between the VCU Athletic Department and its 3,600 donor, $3.5 million annual fundraising operation. This position will assist with fulfillment of donor benefits, coordination of RAF events, provide tremendous customer service and represent VCU Athletics at numerous external functions, home athletic contests, donor trips, and University functions.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Identification of prospects for high-level annual and major gifts, serving as a “front door” to the RAF office, and assisting Major Gift Officers and Senior Administration with donor identification;
• Providing integral support with the coordination of donor benefits, VCU donor database management, parking reallocation, gift/seating renewals, gift processing, game-day operations, special events, booster activities, promotions and other duties as assigned for a $3.5 million annual fund, 3,600 donor operation;
• Managing RAF email account and main RAF phone line;
• Planning, implementing, and overseeing student-athlete “Thank-A-Thon,” reaching over 3,600 donors, and creating a fun, competitive environment for student-athletes to participate and spread the mission of VCU Athletics;

Henrico Police Athletic League (Henrico PAL) is a registered 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and we rely on the generosity of extraordinary citizens and corporations to provide the resources to keep our youth active, productive, and safe. The mission of Henrico PAL is to provide a high quality and safe environment for at-risk youth between the ages of 5 and 18 through educational, athletic and social programs, while creating a positive relationship between police officers and youth. Since our inception in 2007, over 25,000 children have participated in Henrico PAL sponsored programs and events; such as, Henrico PAL's After School Programs where over 50% of participants achieve honor role. Henrico PAL also offers a variety of free educational, recreational, and athletic programs, including Chess Club, Dance, and Open Gym Night. Henrico PAL helps Virginia's youth prepare for college, careers, and citizenship with our Youth Leadership Council (YLC). These programs help improve the lives of Henrico’s youth and sets our community up for success.

Title:   Development and Communications Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities:

Henrico PAL’s Development and Communications Coordinator assists in all aspects of fundraising, communications, and marketing. This part-time position reports to the Executive Director. The Coordinator will maintain donor records, acknowledge donations, and prepare correspondence regarding the organization and its programs. The Coordinator will also assist with external communications of the organization. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support all aspects of an annual development plan that includes goals, work plans, timelines, and donor cultivation.
  • Coordinator is primary point person for updating, adding and maintaining donor and constituent records in the database

VCU Athletics is seeking a Facilities graduate assistant for 2022-23 to help fulfill the VCU Athletics Mission Statement by assisting the facilities and events department.
The graduate assistant will have the opportunity to gain facility and event management knowledge while experiencing the excitement of NCAA Division I athletics.
This position will assist during athletic and non-athletic events, set ups and break downs and after hours coverage of facilities. Graduate assistants should be familiar with facility policies and procedures and risk management practices. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Facilities and Event Management, this position must have a flexible schedule, have a positive attitude toward their job and clients, and be willing to learn and adapt to new situations.
Responsibilities include:
- Attend yearly orientations and sign a confirmation of read policies and procedures;
- Schedule and supervise student staff and interns;
- Coordinate facility projects for Siegel Center, Sports Medicine Building, Sports Backers Stadium, Cary Street Field, Thalhimer Tennis Facility, and others;
- Assist in daily and game day management for intercollegiate athletic competitions, special events, weekly meetings, fairs, concerts, etc.;
- Secure athletic facilities during after normal hours of Monday through Sunday, as well as morning room preparations, including opening meeting spaces and rooms.;
- Learn how to operate all AV equipment in rooms designated for facility management;
- Assist in set ups, breakdowns and turnovers during unusual work hours;
- Event set up equipment include tables, chairs, stages and other related equipment;
- Event set up must be completed in a timely fashion, they may need to be completed in a short period of time;
- Oversee visiting team practices, walk-throughs and shoot-arounds while maintaining facility policies;
- Complete facility walk-throughs and keep track of maintenance projects; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Please note, this GA position includes office hours, athletic events, and non-athletic events. Some night, holiday, and weekend commitments will be required in addition to regular office hours.

Marketing Graduate Assistantship 

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Marketing area during the 2022-23 academic year.
Specifically, the Marketing Graduate Assistants will work closely with all facets of game-day event planning and implementation. Tasks include pre-event planning and advertising, ticket sales, event preparation including marketing set up and tear down, game day script writing, production, and management. Marketing efforts will support VCU’s Division I intercollegiate athletic programs and the overall VCU Athletics brand. This position will work both cooperatively and independently with administrators, coaches, and athletics department staff, as well as other University personnel and student organizations.
All duties and responsibilities will be assigned with the end goal of increasing attendance at VCU athletic events, representing and promoting the VCU athletics brand and increasing revenue for the department.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Overseeing all marketing responsibilities of select sports; developing and implementing marketing plans, promotional schedules and ticket sales campaigns as well as all aspects of game presentation (scripts, promotions, entertainment, etc.);
• Executing group sales plan to increase attendance through community outreach efforts (emphasis on emails and calls to past groups as well as creatively targeting new prospects);
• Overseeing the special marketing programs. (i.e. Junior Rowdy Rams Kids Club);
• Coordinating and managing mascot appearances;
• Assisting with various game day presentation duties for Men’s Basketball (i.e. Scheduling National Anthem singers, serve as on-court game day coordinator);

Marketing Assistant – University of Richmond

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides assistance to the Marketing unit within the Department of Athletics. Responsible for the

development and execution of marketing and promotions plans for select Olympic sports teams, as well

as development of new kid’s club events, both at community appearances and during games to increase

membership. This position will be primarily tasked with increasing attendance while also enhancing the

overall atmosphere at Olympic sporting events. These sports include, but are not exclusive of: baseball,

field hockey, women’s soccer, swimming & diving, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

o Solicit fan attendance at home contests using mostly non-paid advertising mediums such

recognitions, post-game clinics, and/or themes.

  • Create and research fun ideas for Spiderlings Kids Club events, and help develop a plan on how

Title:   Development and Marketing Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities:

Henrico PAL’s Development and Marketing Coordinator assists in all aspects of fundraising and marketing. This part-time position reports to the Executive Director. The Coordinator will maintain donor records, acknowledge donations, and prepare correspondence regarding the organization and its programs. The Coordinator will also assist with the creation of a marketing strategy for the organization.  

Key Responsibilities:

Tuckahoe Sports is a baseball/softball nonprofit that operates TSI Training Center in Henrico, VA.  Our 40,000 sf indoor facility is located in Tuckahoe Park.  We also have access to outdoor fields onsite.  The year round College Development program is headed by Coach Chris McKnight, former MLB Minor coach/scout and successful collegiate coach.  TSI Mid Atlantic Orioles and Titans teams (8u-17u) are competitive within the travel circuit with a focus on attaining college play for those that seek it within our program.   TSI has invested in technology, training and education to create a coaching staff with skills that create successful athletes with a commitment to put in the time to improve.  Recently partnering with Bon Secours Sports Performance and adding a weight room, we feel we have all the components to continue to develop our program and our athletes at the highest level.  Currently we have 19 baseball teams and offer lessons, clinics and camps as well as programming for specific skills.

R-MC is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III.

 

The graduate assistant will be expect to:

  1. Assist with the development and implementation of strength, speed, and conditioning program for the women’s lacrosse program in conjunction with the coaching staff. Advise coaches on pre-game and pre-practice protocols as well as post activity needs.
  2. Design and implement winter break and summer workout plans and schedules.
  3. Communicate with athletic training staff regarding athlete limitations and adjust workouts accordingly.
  4. Adhere to NCAA rules compliance in and be fully informed regarding institutional compliance with the NCAA and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference rules.
  5. Help to supervise team weight room times in order to correct form and technique.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Candidate should already be NSCA (CSCS or CSCCA) certified or be the process of pursuing said certifications.
