THE ANDERSON FALL 2021 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

For Fall 2021 we’re excited to be rolling out a full slate of for-credit internship opportunities at the Anderson – including a +new+ Communications & Social Media position, alongside some old favorites (Photography, Curatorial Research, and Gallery Preparator). Internships are open to ALL qualified VCUarts students, in any department or major. See position descriptions below for full details and application instructions.

+ Communications & Social Media Intern

The Anderson is seeking a student to serve as the Communications & Social Media Intern for the Fall 2021 semester. This intern will manage promotion of Anderson programming via social media, the VCUarts events calendar, the Anderson website and MailChimp newsletter, and more. This intern will assist in the coordination of promotional materials with curatorial staff, asset designers, and exhibiting artists. The intern will identify and execute opportunities for audience engagement on Instagram. The ideal candidate is creative, detail-oriented, highly adept with social media, and able to manage multiple projects at once. Applicants must be comfortable working as part of a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic community. Priority will be given to third and fourth year undergraduate students. Graduate students may also be eligible. The internship is for credit (3 credit hours) with an anticipated commitment of 10-12 hours/week.

+ Gallery Preparator Intern

The Anderson is seeking student applicants to be the Gallery Preparator Intern for the Fall 2021 semester. This intern’s duties will include a wide range of tasks connected with the production of exhibitions at the Anderson including: transportation, handling, packing and installation of artworks; buildout and fabrication in connection with exhibition; maintenance of equipment, galleries and storage space in support of exhibition and general gallery operations. The ideal candidate will be proficient in the use of hand and power tools, have some experience with rough carpentry, and be familiar with the standard materials and making methods of fine art objects. Applicants must be able to lift and carry 50lbs and be comfortable working on ladders and scaffolding. Due to the lack of an elevator, applicants must also be comfortable with frequent use of stairs, including carrying objects up and downstairs. Experience with and knowledge of standard exhibition technology (computers, media players, projectors, monitors, audio systems, etc.) is a plus. Applicants must be comfortable working as part of a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic community. A current driver’s license is required. The internship is for credit (3 credit hours). The anticipated time commitment is 10 hours/week, with the strong likelihood of ‘light’ and ‘heavy’ weeks.

+ Curatorial Research Intern

The Anderson is seeking an Art History student (major or minor in Art History) to serve as Curatorial Research Intern for the Fall 2021 semester. This intern will assist with administrative and curatorial work to aid the curatorial staff, perform research on contemporary artists and artworks for exhibitions, and create concise informational
documents for gallery visitors about the artworks, artists, and exhibitions. The intern may also provide assistance with special projects. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in academic and critical writing on contemporary art, as well as willing to work through many edits with the curatorial staff. Applicants must be comfortable working as part of a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic community. Priority will be given to third and fourth year undergraduate students. Graduate students may also be eligible. The internship is for credit (3 credit hours) with an anticipated commitment of 10-12 hours/week.

+ Photography Intern

The Anderson is seeking a Photography student to serve as the gallery’s Photography Intern for the Fall 2021 semester. This intern will document exhibitions, works of art, and performances, as well as edit and organize files. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in digital photography and videography tools, including Photoshop/Lightroom. Applicants must be comfortable working as part of a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic community. Priority will be given to third and fourth year undergraduate or graduate students. The internship is for credit (3 credit hours). The anticipated time commitment is 10 hours/week, with the strong likelihood of ‘light’ and ‘heavy’ weeks.
