Biomedical engineering post-doc receives grant to study aging and bone

Michael Friedman, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is one of three recipients of the 2020 Fund for Research and Education Research Grant from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). The ASBMR is an international society focused on the study and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect musculoskeletal tissues such as osteoporosis and a number of metastatic cancers. The award comes with $7,500 for his project, titled “Understanding the effects of aging on cellular mechanisms of bone mechanotransduction.”

Friedman works in the Bone Engineering Science Technology Lab, which is directed by Henry J. Donahue, Ph.D., the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin, Jr. Endowed Chair and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at VCU College of Engineering.

“This work will help us understand how bones adapt to exercise differently when we get older,” Friedman said. “It will lead to better treatments to prevent osteoporotic bone fractures.”

ASBMR established the grant in 2017 to help investigators achieve additional training and further their research projects.
